Biography

Rachel Smith is a regulatory compliance consultant based in London. She has a wide range of experience in providing support to compliance functions in the wholesale markets. 

Rachel advises clients on a variety of regulatory compliance issues, including in respect of adherence with FCA requirements, governance and oversight arrangements, systems and controls, and market conduct. She has particular experience in the implementation of regulatory change and guiding clients with the enhancement of their compliance arrangements. She also regularly delivers compliance training across all levels of an organisation.

Rachel's clients include financial institutions, brokers and commodity houses as well as unregulated entities, such as the trading entities within corporates.

Rachel previously worked in the Compliance Team of a wholesale energy company. During that time, she helped to effect compliance cultural change through the implementation of enhanced compliance systems and controls and the re-design of key policies and procedures. 

Prior to this, Rachel worked in the Norton Rose Fulbright Financial Services team for seven years, during which time she undertook a client secondment to the Legal and Compliance Team of a multinational hedge fund manager.

Rachel assists firms in respect of the following areas:

  • Advising on all aspects of regulatory change projects, including impact analysis, documentation requirements, operationalisation and post-implementation review
  • Delivering bespoke compliance training at all levels of an organisation, including front office sessions, board workshops and mock regulatory interviews
  • Managing interactions with, and formal notifications to, relevant regulators
  • Assisting clients with regulatory applications, including variations and cancellations of permission
  • Guiding firms in respect of governance and oversight, including the design of management information and reporting structures
  • Drafting and revising compliance policies and procedures
  • Undertaking compliance monitoring reviews and preparing reports of such reviews for boards and senior management teams
  • Providing regulatory compliance updates for boards and senior management teams
